Stanford Engineering Puzzle
October 2009
Any time you can access another dimension, you should go for it. That's what Sudoku champion Thomas Snyder (a postdoc in bioengineering) thought when he created the puzzle below, and that's what materials science and engineering professor Paul McIntyre was thinking when he led research that could help fellow engineers build three-dimensional integrated circuits.
Directions
Print out the image below and grab a pencil. Your task is Place the digits 1 to 8 into each cell so that each digit appears just once in each row and column (wrapping around the faces of the cube) and each bold-outlined region. To get the secret word, type in the eight digits leading through the top bold-outlined region, starting from the "7" at the top of the cube. The fourth digit is the "8" in that region. When you enter the digits properly, your name should "magically" (and somewhat mysteriously appear, and perhaps repetitively) in the table below. Have fun.
